How to do the barbell shrug

The barbell shrug trains your traps, with help from your neck. Here is how to do it with good form.

Step by step

  1. Grab a barbell with an overhand grip (palms facing back). Your hands should be just outside your thighs.
  2. Straighten your arms, engage your abs, and retract your shoulder blades.
  3. Take a breath and shrug the barbell by elevating your shoulders, exhaling at the top. Imagine that you’re trying to touch your ears with your trapezius.
  4. Lower your shoulder blades as you breathe in.
